Umlauf & Keenen Edge Out The Competition at Edgewater!
The DMP Awnings NITRO CHAOS Championship tour came into Ohio's Edgewater Sports Park on June 20-21st ready to rumble in a two day nitro filled festival of horsepower. The points battle is shaping up to be a dandy and this event was the midway point of the season.
The CHAOS welcomed three first time racers to the series at Edgewater and the qualifying was fast and furious with a total of nine cars in the three second zone. The track preparations and safety team were on point all weekend long providing a stellar racing surface given the high temps on Saturday.
Dave Hill's "Mad Max" nitro funny car led the qualifying sheets narrowly over Cody Austin, both clicking off 3.60 elapsed times in qualifying, earning them a top spot in the McKinney Corp 'A' Field. Chuck Loftin's "Crap Shoot" nitro funny car claimed the top qualifying position in the CP-Carrillo 'B' Field and with pairings set, it was time to play for keeps.
The opening round of McKinney Corp 'A' Field competition saw two very surprising red lights from top points contenders Cody Austin and Garry Wheeler Jr, which opened the door for the competition to widen the gap in the standings with some round wins. Also in that first round, points leader James Gilliland came up short in a great race with Jake Sanders. With three of the top five in points on the trailer after first round, the excitement was building as the CHAOS continued.
The final rounds were ready to go and kicked off with a surprising competition single by Levi Kennen and the "Illinois Thunder" team in the CP-Carrillo 'B' Field. Their opponent, Chuck Loftin, was unable to make the call after he damaged both front tires in his semi-final round pass. Kennen ripped off his best pass of the night with a full pull, 3.90 at 190 mph to take the win.
In McKinney Corp 'A' Field action, Jake Sanders and "The Menace" team owned by Dennis Mitchell were ready to tango with John Umlauf and team "Mass Chaos". Umlauf came into the final with low elapsed time of the event from first round, a stellar 3.56 at 217 mph. Sanders on the other hand was showing impressive consistency with multiple passes in the 3.60 zone, regardless of the weather and track conditions. This was sure to be a drag race and it was!
Umlauf and Sanders were off the line together, just .002 apart. Flames up and the ground pounding, they were side by side and charging hard until both cars started having traction issues. The candles went out early in both lanes, but Umlauf had the momentum and his 3.74 at 169 mph was enough to hold off Sanders' 3.75 at only 101 mph as the "Mass Chaos" team celebrated a big win on the starting line.
Two new winners on the 2025 season were crowned in the winners circle and we now have an even tighter points battle brewing as the top eight contenders are separated by only twenty three points with two events remaining on the DMP Awnings Nitro Chaos Championship tour. Dave Hill has a narrow lead over John Umlauf, Brian Inouye, Cody Austin and James Gilliland as the top five are now separated by only eight points!
The next stop on the schedule brings the series to Smokin' Mo-Kan Dragway's 63rd Anniversary event, to be held July 18-19th in Asbury, Missouri. We'll see you...at the CHAOS!
