Umlauf Doubles Down To Clinch DMP Awnings NITRO CHAOS Championship!

The highly anticipated conclusion to the 2025 DMP Awnings NITRO CHAOS Championship tour was held October 3-4th at Midstate Dragway in Havana, Illinois. Under clear blue skies and the watchful eyes of a nitro hungry crowd amongst the cornfields of Illinois, the pits filled with fuel burners of all kinds for this two day festival of outlaw nitromethane burning excitement.

Coming into the event, defending event winner John Umlauf Jr and team "Mass Chaos" held just a single point lead over red hot rookie Cody Austin and team "BushWhacker". With a fleet of fellow competitors hungry for a season ending win, the competition was sure to be tough on these two Championship contenders.

Friday night's qualifying certainly wasn't what we had anticipated as teams struggled to find their combinations and two major oil own related delays from Q1 ended up ending the night early. Saturday's final qualfying session though, was a different story.

Cody Austin wowed the crowd ripping off a 3.66 in the final qualifying session to take the top spot away from John Umlauf who led after Friday's session. Austin earned himself two critical points, how putting him one point in the lead heading into eliminations. The rest of the field shuffled in nicely with strong performances in the final qualifying session and with the ladders set, it was time to play for keeps.

The opening round of eliminations in the McKinney Motorsports 'A' Field found both Umlauf and Austin scoring critical wins to move into the semi-finals. In that semi-final round, John Umlauf lined up with rising star Jake Sanders in a total toss-up. Umlauf had to play catch-up off the line but was closing the gap fast and laid down a stellar 3.65 at 217 to take a big win and move into the final round. In the next pair, Cody Austin was squaring off with Brian Inouye. Inouye took a massive starting line advantage and looked to be the sure winner, then tire shake set in on the "Frantic Fueler" entry.

Meanwhile Austin had his hands full drifting out of the groove towards the wall. In a wild pedalfest-ish pairing, Inouye advanced with a 5.61 to Austin's 6.01 and Austin watched his rookie season Championship efforts quickly fade, as John Umlauf then mathematically locked in the 2025 DMP Awnings NITRO CHAOS Championship!  The Umlauf team celebrated but the focus was still the same as it was when they arrived, win the race.

Meanwhile in the CP-Carrillo 'B' Field, Brian Kohlmann and Andy Fangman wheeled their door slammers into the final round to square off in the first double door car Nitro Chaos final in series history. Fangman was runner-up at this event last year, while Kohlmann was racking up round wins coming into the event as the most recent class winner from Mo-Kan in July.

In what has to be the wildest final round in series history, Fangman's engine let go as he neared half-track and sent the car wildly out of control and across into Kohlmann's lane. Kohlmann had an eye on the action and used impressive evasive maneuvers to keep from making contact, while Fangman was up on the wheel in a big way doing his best to keep control of his out of control fuel burning Camaro.

When the smoke, dust, oil and fumes cleared, both drivers were thankfully able to walk away and somehow manage to avoid contact as Kohlmann scored his second straight 'B' Field win and Top 10 points finish to close an impressive season for the fuel coupe from Wisconsin.

It was a memorable double down title clinching effort for John Umlauf and team "Mass Chaos" while the other final Top 10 points finishers also celebrated their efforts and piece of the DMP Awnings Championship payouts. Congratulations to the 2025 NITRO CHAOS Champion John Umlauf and to all the final Top 10 finishers!

Austin & Kohlmann Make Moves at Mo-Kan!

The DMP Awnings NITRO CHAOS Championship tour charged into Smokin' Mo-Kan Dragway to headline the facility's 63rd Anniversary event on July 18-19th. This event marked the fourth of five events on the championship tour and a heated points battle had developed coming into Mo-Kan. Dave Hill and the "Mad Max" AA/FC team had a slight four point lead over John Umlauf's "Mass Chaos" AA/FA team with Brian Inouye, Cody Austin, James Gilliland and Garry Wheeler Jr all within just fifteen points of each other. Needless to say, this was a big event for those hunting precious DMP Awnings points in hopes of being crowned a Nitro Chaos champion.

With qualifying complete, Jake Sanders came into the McKinney Motorsports 'A' Field leading the sheets with a 3.74 at 209 mph in the "Menace" Outlaw Top Fuel Dragster and James Gilliland wheeled Dale "Lurch" Wilkens' "Psycho Too" AA/Fuel Altered to the top spot in the CP-Carrillo 'B' Field with a 4.43 at 119 mph. Those top qualifying positions didn't help in eliminations as both teams took surprising first round losses.

In a monster first round match-up, the number one and two teams in points, Hill and Umlauf, found themselves paired up and the results of this pair could tell the tale of the championship title at the end of the season. Hill was off the line with a strong .039 reaction time but at half-track things got wild as the "Mad Max" fuel flopper started making a move to the wall and then spinning the tires, sending Hill wildly across the centerline at the top end. Thankfully, Hill was able to gather it up safely, but his first round loss to Umlauf opened the door for his competition to make big moves in the points chase.

As eliminations continued, another exciting story was developing in the CP-Carrillo 'B' Field as Paul Schultz had wheeled Rick Taylor's "Nitro Monkey" injected nitro dragster to the final round to take on first time finalist Brian Kohlmann in the Jerry Newman tuned "Street Fuel Coupe" from Wisconsin. In that final, Kohlmann's car was having fuel system issues and was struggling to stay running as it pulled into the stage beams. As the ambers dropped, Schultz turned on the red light making Kohlmann the automatic winner. Not the heads up, side by side final we had hoped for, but none the less a big win for a dedicated team and fan favorite of Nitro Chaos. Congratulations to both teams on a strong effort at Mo-Kan.

In McKinney Motorsports 'A' Field final round action, Cody Austin, who had knocked out top qualifier Jake Sanders and 2023 Nitro Chaos Champion Garry Wheeler Jr, found himself paired with John Umlauf Jr who had knocked out Dave Hill and Anthony Whitfield in route to the last dance at Mo-Kan.

The cars backed up from their burnouts and crews made their final adjustments as the cars were guided into the staging beams. Both pre-stage bulbs were on and then it got fun as neither driver wanted to stage first. After an exciting staging battle, Umlauf decided to stage first and then left Austin sitting at the starting line with a huge reaction time advantage. Despite his lead at the hit, Umlauf's fuel altered ran out of steam at the top end and his 3.90 at only 147 mph allowed Austin to drive around him with a 3.67 at 204 mph as team "BushWhacker" took the win and erupted in celebration on the starting line.

In a thrilling evening of eliminations at Mo-Kan Dragway, the points battle got a big shake up and John Umlauf will carry a one point lead over Cody Austin into the Twisted Shifterz Nitro Chaos Championship Finals at Midstate Dragway in Havana, Illinois on October 3-4th. Dave Hill, Garry Wheeler and James Gilliland are now twenty points out of the top spot and only separated by three points themselves, as the battle for final positions in the top five will be fun to watch. As we saw in Mo-Kan, anything can happen and big points swings can be made with just one upset in the first round of eliminations. The pressure is on and the excitement is building for the final event of the DMP Awnings Nitro Chaos Championship Tour and we look forward to seeing you...at the CHAOS!

Umlauf & Keenen Edge Out The Competition at Edgewater!

The DMP Awnings NITRO CHAOS Championship tour came into Ohio's Edgewater Sports Park on June 20-21st ready to rumble in a two day nitro filled festival of horsepower. The points battle is shaping up to be a dandy and this event was the midway point of the season.

The CHAOS welcomed three first time racers to the series at Edgewater and the qualifying was fast and furious with a total of nine cars in the three second zone. The track preparations and safety team were on point all weekend long providing a stellar racing surface given the high temps on Saturday.

Dave Hill's "Mad Max" nitro funny car led the qualifying sheets narrowly over Cody Austin, both clicking off 3.60 elapsed times in qualifying, earning them a top spot in the McKinney Corp 'A' Field. Chuck Loftin's "Crap Shoot" nitro funny car claimed the top qualifying position in the CP-Carrillo 'B' Field and with pairings set, it was time to play for keeps.

The opening round of McKinney Corp 'A' Field competition saw two very surprising red lights from top points contenders Cody Austin and Garry Wheeler Jr, which opened the door for the competition to widen the gap in the standings with some round wins. Also in that first round, points leader James Gilliland came up short in a great race with Jake Sanders. With three of the top five in points on the trailer after first round, the excitement was building as the CHAOS continued.

The final rounds were ready to go and kicked off with a surprising competition single by Levi Kennen and the "Illinois Thunder" team in the CP-Carrillo 'B' Field. Their opponent, Chuck Loftin, was unable to make the call after he damaged both front tires in his semi-final round pass. Kennen ripped off his best pass of the night with a full pull, 3.90 at 190 mph to take the win.

In McKinney Corp 'A' Field action, Jake Sanders and "The Menace" team owned by Dennis Mitchell were ready to tango with John Umlauf and team "Mass Chaos". Umlauf came into the final with low elapsed time of the event from first round, a stellar 3.56 at 217 mph. Sanders on the other hand was showing impressive consistency with multiple passes in the 3.60 zone, regardless of the weather and track conditions. This was sure to be a drag race and it was!

Umlauf and Sanders were off the line together, just .002 apart. Flames up and the ground pounding, they were side by side and charging hard until both cars started having traction issues. The candles went out early in both lanes, but Umlauf had the momentum and his 3.74 at 169 mph was enough to hold off Sanders' 3.75 at only 101 mph as the "Mass Chaos" team celebrated a big win on the starting line.

Two new winners on the 2025 season were crowned in the winners circle and we now have an even tighter points battle brewing as the top eight contenders are separated by only twenty three points with two events remaining on the DMP Awnings Nitro Chaos Championship tour. Dave Hill has a narrow lead over John Umlauf, Brian Inouye, Cody Austin and James Gilliland as the top five are now separated by only eight points!

The next stop on the schedule brings the series to Smokin' Mo-Kan Dragway's 63rd Anniversary event, to be held July 18-19th in Asbury, Missouri. We'll see you...at the CHAOS!

Wheeler & Austin Claim Victory at CHAOS in the Cornfield!

The DMP Awnings NITRO CHAOS Championship tour charged into Iowa to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Eddyville Raceway Park on May 23-25th at the 2nd Annual Twisted Shifterz and 360-Steel CHAOS in the Cornfield presented by Stanke Motorsports!

Sharing the stage with the Funny Car Chaos series, this three day CHAOS double down event is the biggest event of the year at ERP. With parts attrition from the season opener being the biggest factor, thirteen entries came to compete in the Nitro Chaos categories. Qualifying was tricky for the high horsepower flame throwers and after the ladders were set it was time to play for keeps in Sunday's final eliminations.

In the CP-Carrillo 'B' Field, a pair of fuel altereds came to life as first time CHAOS finalist Cody Austin wheeled the "BushWhacker" to the line to square off with Anthony Whitfield's all new "Mighty Mouse" entry. Austin had this one from start to finish and despite coming extremely close to taking out the finish line markers, clicked off a winning 4.28 at 118 mph to Whitfield's 5.01 at 118 mph. Whitfield had major engine problems in the run and hopefully will be able to make repairs in time for the next event on tour.

The McKinney Corp 'A' Field finalists fired up in a pair of outlaw front engine top fuel dragsters. Garry Wheeler Jr wheeled Jon Brook's "Grand Prix Racing" entry to the line to take on Brian Inouye in Dave Daunheimer's "Frantic Fueler" machine. Both these teams had shown big numbers in previous rounds and this was a toss-up for any betting fans. Inouye took a slight starting line advantage but just past half-track ran into issues and was forced to lift while Wheeler laid down a strong 3.73 at 200 mph to claim victory in Iowa.

The NITRO CHAOS competitors have a few weeks off before returning to Ohio's Edgewater Sports Park on June 20-21st. We'll see you...at the CHAOS!

Sanders & Gilliland Score at the Texas Motorplex!

The highly anticipated kick off of the 2025 DMP Awnings Nitro Chaos Championship tour took place May 1-3rd at the historic Texas Motorplex and the CHAOS lived up to its name as the action on raceday was some of the tightest and most exciting we've seen in series history!

A stout field of twenty four cars were on the property in hopes of earning a spot in the sixteen car feature show. Weather delayed the Nitro Chaos teams from qualifying on Friday and it was time to thrash on Saturday with two qualifying sessions followed by eliminations in the McKinney Corp 'A' Field and CP-Carrillo 'B' Field.

With header flames up and nitro fumes filling the sky the elimination rounds of Nitro Chaos were action packed. It was time for the last dance and first up was the McKinney Corp 'A' Field final featuring two first time finalists Jake Sanders in "The Menace" Outlaw Top Fuel Dragster against Donnie Massey's "Showtime" AA/Fuel Altered. The drivers left the line together but by sixty feet Massey was out of the groove and forced to lift giving him the best seat in the house to watch Sanders and company blast to a 3.71 at 212 mph for an impressive and memorable first win for the Dennis Mitchell owned team and driver / tuner Jake Sanders.

The last pair of the night welcomed two more first time Nitro Chaos finalists to the line for the CP-Carrillo 'B' Field final round featuring Chuck Loftin's brand new "Crap Shoot" AA/Fuel Altered against James Gilliland in the "Psycho Too" AA/Fuel Altered. This one was a thriller as both cars used pedal jobs to try and get to the stripe first and it was Gilliland's 4.09 at 174 mph narrowly defeating Loftin's 4.10 at 175 mph. Big congratulations to Gilliland and owner / tuner Dale Wilkens on their first Nitro Chaos event win!

Congratulations to all the Nitro Chaos participants and thank you for your support through the weather challenges we faced early in the season and at the Texas Motorplex.

The next stop on the DMP Awnings Nitro Chaos Championship tour takes the series to Iowa's Eddyville Raceway Park and their 60th Anniversary celebration, the 2nd Annaul Twisted Shifters & 360-Steel CHAOS IN THE CORNFIELD presented by Stanke Motorsports on May 23-25th. We'll see you...at the CHAOS!
