Haas & Hunter Marvel at Mo-Kan
The DMP Awnings Nitro Chaos Championship series packed the pits with nineteen outlaw nitro burners at Smokin' Mo-Kan Dragway to celebrate the track's 62nd Anniversary on Friday night and Saturday, July 19-20th, presented by Twisted Shifterz. Coming into this event there was a four way points battle and each round would prove critical in the chase for the Championship!
Many of the heavy hitters struggled in qualifying on Friday and Saturday's final qualifying session saw a big shuffle in the qualifying order which ended up being led in order by the top three in points, Joey Haas, Mitch King and Jody Austin. Wade Pennington came in number four in points and snuck into the 'A' Field as the top four cars in points were all in the same field heading into eliminations.
The fields were set and it was time to play for keeps under the watchful eyes of a sold out and record setting crowd at Mo-Kan Dragway. The second pair of first round brought the capacity crowd to an eerie silence as Anthony Whitfield went for one of the wildest rides in recent history in his fuel altered. The car drifted across the centerline and out of control back into the guardrail at 175+ miles per hour and bounced into the air landing upside down and on fire. Incredibly, Whitfield climbed out of his mangled machine with zero injuries and in true racer fashion his sole focus was how fast he can get another racecar together for the 2025 season. Whew, what a ride. The CHAOS family and Mo-Kan Dragway fans were very thankful to see Whitfield walk away.
Haas, King and Austin all advanced to the semi-finals in the McKinney Motorsports 'A' Field. Haas met friendly rival Jody Austin in that semi-final and used a 3.60 to narrowly defeat Austin's 3.66. King squared off with John Umlauf and Umlauf took the upset with with his best pass of the season, a 3.74 to King's quicker but loosing 3.65. In the final, Umlauf took a slight starting line advantage but near half-track the flames fizzled and Haas took the stripe and his second win in a row with a 3.67 at 197 mph to pad his points lead heading into the Twisted Shifterz Nitro Chaos Championship Finals at Midstate Dragway on September 20-21st.
In the CP-Carrillo 'B' Field Kebin Kinsley wheeled the "War Wagon III" Outlaw Top Fuel Dragster to the line in a semi-final round competition bye run, but was shut-off with an oil leak. That meant that the pair sitting in the water, Paul Schultz versus Mark Hunter, immediately became the true final round in 'B' Field competition. The call was made to proceed with running that final round immediately and side by side to give the fans a true two car final round where Mark Hunter's off pace 4.60 bested Schultz' also sluggish 5.60.
Sell out and record crowds on back to back nights at Mo-Kan provided a thrilling scene for this outlaw nitro showdown in Missouri and special guests Farmtruck and Azn from Street Outlaws also got in on the fun. The date has been confirmed for Mo-Kan 2025 and teams and fans can mark their calendars for July 18-19th, 2025!
